Rising temperature a threat to cyclists

City Environment Health

Research shows that cycling, despite being a sustainable mode of transport, has become vulnerable to climate variations.

Cyclists in the city struggle   due to climate change. Rising   temperatures have resulted in cyclists being   susceptible to heat and pollution,  compared to those using  other modes of transport.

Daily commuters using bicycles   are concerned about their health as   city’s temperature continues to rise.

Ali Poonawala,  has cycled to  his office everyday for almost 15 years  . He said that initially, it was   difficult for him  to cycle in   hot weather, but now he’s  used to it. He said, “Sometimes,  due to traffic, I have tocycle for an extra hour to reach my office.”

The condition of cyclists is worsened while riding on the congested roads. Ali said that in certain areas,   cycle lanes   are unavailable, forcing them to navigate through the traffic on the road.   He added that   he carries water bottles, ORS, and   supplements while cycling for work.

He mentioned that commuters who have recently started cycling may experience difficulties due to rising temperatures.

A research paper published  in the Journal of Transport Geography titled ‘How does weather affects the bike share use’ suggests that cycling, despite being the most sustainable   mode of transportation, is  susceptible to climate variations.  Cyclists are exposed to the effects of the   changing weather conditions.

Akshay Heblikar, Director at Eco-Watch said that increasing temperature will have an adverse impact on cyclists. He said, “cyclists’ health will be affected as they will be exposed to both pollution and heat, unlike those using other modes of transport.”

Akshay said   the government should implement measures like extending separate lanes for cycling. He added that action should be taken against those who block these lanes.

He added that if the government is planning to improve  road infrastructure,  proper planning is essential.
