City Health Science

Temperatures are not likely to fall, either.

Bengaluru will continue to have dry days in the rest of April,  Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

A spokesperson from IMD said that last weekend’s rainfall was scattered, and areas near Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) did not witness any rainfall. “The last widespread rain that the city experienced was on November 15 last year. The temperature will continue to hover between 35 degrees celsius to 39 degrees celsius on an average, and we are expecting dry weather for at least the next five days all over the state,” the spokesperson added.

The IMD had earlier predicted rainfall in the middle of April, but that did not happen because the high air pressure in the region at that time caused the skies to stay clear. The spokesperson explained that the heat wave was caused by the El-Nino effect. “Due to El-Nino over the Indian region, the monsoon season is disrupted. The effects are not only on Bengaluru, but the monsoon pattern has changed all over the country.”

The summer heat has caused patients of heat strokes reported in hospitals.

Heat strokes:

The heatwave in Bengaluru has led to over 700 cases of heatstroke in the city. The Medical Superintendent of Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital said the rise in number of cases in the city is unprecedented, at least in the past decade. “The lack of rainfall has contributed to the heat in the city, and staying outdoors for longer hours in such heat leads to dehydration and dizziness, which could lead to heat stroke. Skin concerns like rashes and itchiness are also being reported.”

Victoria Hospital reported about 300 cases of the nearly 700 cases of heatstroke reported in the city. . The medical superintendent of the hospital said that the numbers may continue to rise until rain cools down the city’s weather. “It is advisable for people to immediately find shade when they feel dizzy or nauseous and not stay in the sunlight for long at a stretch, especially during afternoon. One needs to take care of their body temperature, keeping themselves properly hydrated,” he said.
