Karnataka High Court stayed the ban on 23 dog breeds in Karnataka

Dog owners in Karnataka are appreciating the Karnataka High Court’s stay of the ban on 23 ferocious and dangerous dog breeds.

Welcoming the HC stay on the ban, Justin James, a dog owner from Bangalore said that people should have the freedom to buy whichever dog they like. “All dogs bite; banning certain breeds of dogs is not the right thing to do. For most people like me, dogs are a part of the family too. Since certain people like certain breeds of dogs, people should be given the freedom to buy the dog they like. Snakes are poisonous and a big danger. But we cannot ban snakes or kill all the snakes, but when it comes to dogs, people can pet them and give them  good care. There is nothing dangerous in that,” he said.

Justin added that any dog can be taught to be aggressive there is no point of blaming only certain dog breeds for all the dog bites.

Vineeth another dog owner said, “I bred my Golden Retriever and got four puppies  and I was planning to sell the babies but no one is willing to buy it now because of the ban and it is costly to feed all of them together for me.”

Dr. Jayaramu G M Dean of the Veterinary College said that the rules and policies should be followed for the safety. And since this is a judicial decision , it is final.

Nikhil Chandran, said that it’s necessary to regulate pet animals which are harmful to humans. “I got bitten by a dog once when I went to my friend’s house, his dog came running to me. I got afraid and  was unable to run and the dog bit me. Many similar incidents happened with my friends too.”

Ajith Pal, works in Animal Cognition Program said “If the dog breeds are banned because of theiraggressive nature almost all of the dogs are aggressive even the street dogs are aggressive in nature.”

On 19 March the Karnataka High Court  stayed the Delhi High Court’s ban on certain dog breeds which is only applicable in Karnataka.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy breeding, selling and importing  certain breeds of dogs like Pitbull Terier, Tosa Inu, Amefican Staffordshire Teruier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweiler, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf dogs, Canario should be prohibited because these dog breeds are considered as ferocious and dangerous to humans.
