Old conflict reignited for election, says Congress.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in both Karnataka and Maharshtra believe that the Supreme Court verdict will favour their respective states.
Chief Spokesperson of BJP Karnataka, M.G Mahesh, said that there is no dispute. The party believes that Belagavi is a part of Karnataka and it will remain the same.
He said, “I am sure that the supreme court verdict will come in Karnataka’s favor. As per the Majahan commission report we have the right over that land.” More than 800 villages near the border are living peacefully.
He added, “Whatever the issue is, governors of both the states can resolve this peacefully in the interest of the nation.”
BJP Chief Spokesperson of Maharashtra, Keshav Upadhyay said, “This is an old conflict that started with Pandit Nehru and his committee. Since then, Belagavi has been a part of Karnataka illegally. Now the matter is in court, we have to wait for the verdict.”
He added that they will respect the court’s decision. He believes that the decision will be in Maharashtra’s favour. According to the The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 the border town of Belagavi belongs to Karnataka based on linguistic reasons.
Devendra, Senior Leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) said, “This is a political move made by the Karnataka and Maharashtra governments because of the upcoming election. They do not intend to solve this issue and are doing it during elections just to make a point.
He added, “This issue is a failure of the chief ministers of both states. Law and Order situation can also arise in the border area if the order of court comes against Karnataka or Maharashtra.”

Dr.Harishikesh M Bevanur, a Professor of Political Science, said that this move by the ruling party is aimed at the next state assembly elections. “This game plan by the BJP is a political mirage. By pushing this border issue, it highly speaks of their agenda.”
