Antigua Police has filed a missing person’s report and is currently probing the matter.

Haryana: Lawyers feel that even if Mehul Choksi is found in Antigua, the Indian government will have to make diplomatic efforts to get him back.  The Indian government has to wait for the local police of Antigua to track him then, “If he has fled to another country, then we have to look which country he is in and whether or not they have an extradition treaty with India,” said Abhishek Vashista, a Punjab and Haryana High Court Lawyer.

The reason that the Indian government could not get Choksi back after he fled the country is that “we don’t have an extradition treaty with Antigua,” Vashista said.

Local police of Antigua are investigating the whereabouts of the 62-year-old fraudster, Mehul Choksi of Jolly Harbour.

Choksi went missing on May 23, 2021, as reported by the Johnson Point Police Station. The local police have begun a hotline for any information regarding the absconded Choksi, reports Antigua media. Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, wanted in the Rs 14,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, may have fled Antigua ,working his way to Cuba. Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are both wanted for allegedly siphoning off crores of public money from the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) in 2018.

Antigua’s government officials issued a statement that there will be “no extradition case, if Mehul Choksi is not traced,” reports Indian media. Choksi’s lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal, has confirmed him missing from Antigua.
