The corridor is expected to benefit vehicles traveling from west Bangalore to heart of the city.
Bangalore, March 1, 2018: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated an 8-lane bi-directional corridor constructed by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) today at Okhalipuram junction, near the City Railway Station.
The corridor comprises of a two-lane road from Rajajinagar to Malleswaram, a flyover from Rajajinagar to City Railway Station, an underpass from Malleswaram towards Rajajinagar and a road from Okhalipuram circle to Fountain Circle.
With the junction experiencing clogged roads on a daily basis, the BBMP aims to ease the traffic congestion from West Bangalore to central business districts through this corridor.
Ravi, a traffic police constable said, “Okhalipuram junction has always been crowded as it’s a point of convergence. With this corridor, traffic should reduce as 50 per cent vehicles would take the two-lane road. Divergence of vehicles will help.”
In a bid to develop infrastructure to improve traffic in the city, Rs. 115 crore was allocated for the project in 2011and in 2012, Rs. 102 crore was sanctioned, the press release states..
Abhinav M, an urban planner based in Bangalore said, “Adding flyovers and underpasses are not an effective solution. We have seen in cities like Delhi that it adds to more vehicles on the roads. To reduce Bangalore’s traffic problems we should enhance the public transport system as that’s a sustainable way.”
