The hotel industry is going through an unprecedented crisis. Hotels are not the favourite place to work for hospitality graduates.
“There are a lot of other options available for candidates with a basic qualification of hospitality. Hotel management graduates are getting better grooming and because of that they are highly sought after by other industries and corporations. Today’s millennial want fast money and fast growth with fancy designations.
Hotel industry’ salary scale is not the best in the industry, and a job other than hotels is more lucrative. Millennials also want to study further and want to choose something beyond hotels or something more entrepreneurial,” said Poulomi Bhattacharya, Director of Human Resources, at the Oterra – a hotel located in Electronics City, Phase 1.
Commenting on how the hotel industry is coping with this challenge, Bhattacharya said: “No magic wand, no secrets but just hunt and hunt for the right talent. In the process, we also compromise somewhere and ensure we fill up the gap in training once we get them on board.”
When asked if this shortage in quality to choose from affects the industry, Bhattacharya said: “It doesn’t really as Hosteliering is changing from the luxury element to more mid-scale hotels, and self-service hotels. So a lot has changed with many international brands in the market.
“Of course the world is changing, the policies are changing so are people and so are the guests. So we have been able to cope up with the intensive training we give in-house,” added the HR director of The Oterra.
