IIJNM-FactShala Zonal Hub for Media Literacy
Newsletter October 2023
Dear readers,
We are excited to share the initiatives and events that have unfolded at the Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) in October 2023. This month was filled with learning, engagement and commitment to combat misinformation.
Lecture Series on Misinformation and News Literacy Workshop
In the first week of October, IIJNM conducted a lecture series on Misinformation and a Media Literacy Workshops in Hyderabad. These workshops saw an enthusiastic turnout of around 250 students from both St. Ann’s and St. Mary’s college, Hyderabad. The goal is to empower students with both the knowledge and tools to critically evaluate information, identify credible sources, and effectively combat misinformation.
WhatsApp Zonal Hub Group for Monitoring Misinormation
In our ongoing commitment to fostering a responsible digital community, we’ve created a WhatsApp Zonal Hub Group that brings together students from these institutions to collaborate with IIJNM students. This group provides a platform for students to share and fact check claims or misinformation they encounter in their daily lives. By collaborating and verifying facts, we aim to collectively counter the spread of false information.
IIJNM’s Media Literacy Activities Page
To keep the momentum going, we’ve created a dedicated web page on the IIJNM student publication for posting media literacy activities. This page will showcase the various initiatives and campaigns we undertake to promote media literacy.
Continuing our efforts to gain a better understanding on the types of information received on social media, our students researched and analysed recent posts received on different platforms. They looked at the sources – the credibility of the source, and the nature of the information.
Students Join Factshala’s Satyagraha Campaign
As responsible citizens representing the younger generation, our students have actively participated in Factshala’s Satyagraha campaign. This campaign is a collective effort to stand against misinformation and its harmful consequences. By participating in Satyagraha, our students are actively contributing to the fight against the spread of fake news, by building a healthier information ecosystem for the society.
Stay tuned for more exciting developments and initiatives as we continue our journey to combat misinformation.
