Bangalore City University will get a new academic block, sports block and a swimming pool as part of the campus re-development project.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai plans to build a knowledge city in Bengaluru and believes the renovated campus of the Bengaluru City University is the “forum which is going to decide the future of education of Karnataka’s youth.” He said that Bengaluru will soon be an education district.
He was inaugurating the new teaching and sports complex of Bangalore City University (BCU). The old buildings at the BCU and the campus are being renovated. Already the main entrance and some buildings have been renovated as part of the development work at the university.
A visiting faculty of BCU said, “The renovation was much needed because the buildings were very old and some were damaged.”
A BCU student who was in a hurry to attend the event said, “The whole campus is being renovated, including the gates and all.”
The ongoing project includes adding a new academic block of 1,20,000 square feet with a ground floor and six floors to cater to additional intake of approximately 2,000 students. A modern indoor sports complex, gymnasium, yoga hall and classroom for sports related courses will also be built. Constructing a state-of-the-art Olympic standard pool is also part of the project.
“The work is ongoing and the project’s estimated cost is Rs. 155 crore. As part of the project, the old heritage buildings of the University are being reconstructed from the stretch of Canara Bank to the Maths Building,” said project in-charge Vijay Shankar.
Selvaraj, a security guard who has been working at the University for nearly a year said, “They are renovating all buildings, including the park and the gate of the University. They are making it all better than it was; all the old buildings are getting a new look.” Renovation of toilets, auditorium, doors, windows and building disabled-friendly ramp at the building entrances are also a part of the project. The re-development works that are in progress in the University also include CCTV system for common areas.
Students from various colleges, including the Seshadripuram Institute of Commerce and Management (SICM) and Seshadripuram Evening College were present at the university event as volunteers.
Anusha Nadiger, teacher from the department of Commerce and Management of Seshadripuram Evening Degree College was present with eight students to attend the inauguration event. She said, she had no idea of any renovation in the university and was just asked to attend the ceremony two days ago.
