Government is planning to shut down the MSGP tech park because of several accidents caused due to lack of traffic police. In a recent incident involving a garbage truck, two people were killed.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to shut down the Material Solutions for Green Planet (MSGP) tech park in Chighurenhalli.
Parashuram, BBMP Joint Commissioner of Solid Waste Management said, “The corporation is planning to shut down the tech park, once we find alternative land to build a different tech park. We are planning to set up different treatment plants in order to reduce the burden of the MSGP tech park.”
He added that the police have started training the drivers. They verify the documents such as driving licenses, and vehicle fitness certificates. They also provided flags to truck drivers so that they can track them easily if anything happens. Also, they check if drivers are drunk and punish them accordingly.
Mallikarjun Baladandi, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Bangalore district said, “There have been incidents of accidents but the problem in rural areas is that there is no concept of traffic police. Civil police have to handle everything. If there had been a dedicated staff to manage traffic, especially at night, accidents could have decreased.”
He added that a lack of traffic police staff on national highways passing through rural areas leads to more road accidents.
Data from the Karnataka state police department shows that in October 2022 alone, Bangalore district(urban and rural) registered 175 road accidents, while it recorded 1768 road accidents from January to October.
Police have arrested the driver of the garbage truck that was involved in a recent accident where two people were killed.
Harish, Police Inspector, Doddabelavangla said, “The accident happened on National Highway 207 and both the vehicles were driving in the same direction”
Parashuram said, “We have already shortlisted the names of the victims and directed the MLA of the region to provide them the compensation. Our officers also visited the place of the accident.”
Harish added that such accidents due to drivers’ negligence always happen on national highways which are not a big deal.”
He said that it is very hard for civil police to manage everything on national highways.“People are protesting for on-the-spot compensation, where they want BBMP officials and MLA to pay compensation to the families just after the incident happens. But, it is not how official things are conducted,” he added
