Newsletter for February 2024

Dear readers,

February was a month filled with creative learning, as students took a deep dive into the realms of digital literacy. They used their learned knowledge into crafting insightful guides aimed at helping their peers navigate the complexities of information consumption.

Crafting Digital Literacy Tip Sheets

Using what they have learnt over the last few months, our students embarked on a project to create comprehensive and creative tip sheets. These tip sheets are designed to serve as instructional material for individuals striving to understand the information on the internet. With a blend of creativity and simplicity, these guides aim to equip readers with the necessary tools to become a media literate.

Empowering Through Education: Lectures on Misinformation and News Literacy

In February, the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM) held lectures and workshops on misinformation and media literacy. Hosted at Jai Hind College in Mumbai, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, and Mariam College in Kerala, these events drew an enthusiastic participation of around 200 students. The primary objective of these sessions is to fortify students with the critical skills required to scrutinize information, highlight reliable sources, and actively counter misinformation.

IIJNM faculty conducted a workshop at Marian College, Kuttikkanam, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi.
IIJNM faculty had an interactive session with students at Jai Hind College, Mumbai, on ‘Ethics in Journalism’ and ‘Critical Thinking and Empowerment through Verification Tools to fight against Misinformation.

Collaborative Efforts in Information Verification

Our dedicated students took a step further by collaborating with peers from Jai Hind college in Mumbai, focusing on the vital skill of information verification. Our students shared the valuable tools and critical thinking abilities gained through their media literacy journey, thereby extending their knowledge to more students in the academic community.

These initiatives underscore our commitment to spreading awareness and knowledge among the young generation in making them an informed information consumer, a media literate.

We look forward to sharing more milestones with you in the next month.

Stay tuned for more explorations into the world of Media Literacy in our next newsletter.
