Denmark most democratic

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) assessed Demark to be the most electorally democratic country in 2022, with a score of 0.92. The assessment is based on the extent to which political leaders are elected through exercise of comprehensive voting rights in free and fair elections, and where freedoms of association and expression are guaranteed. It ranges from 0 to 1, with 1 being the most democratic. India’s score in this assessment was 0.4.

The Election Commission of India (ECI)  launched a strategy called Turnout Implementation Plan (TIP) in 2023, to push the voter turnout above 70 percent in the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024. It focuses on four key areas: voter registration, voter awareness, voter facilitation, and voter feedback.

According to the Election commission of India, Lakshadweep had the highest voter turnout in India in 2019 with 85.21 percent votes being polled.  Jammu and Kashmir had the lowest voter turnout with 44.97 percent votes being polled.

When Indians chose NOTA

By choosing “None of the Above” (NOTA) during polling, a citizen chooses not to vote for any candidate who is contesting the election. While the committee of Bharat suggested to the Supreme Court in 2009 about such a possibility, it was only during the assembly election in 2013 that this possibility was utilised for the first time. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 1.06 percent of the total votes polled were NOTA.

The youth take on voting in India

According to Lokniti- Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), youth votes polled in 2014 Loksabha election was higher than the overall voter turnout of 66 percent. However, in 2019 elections, the voter turnout was stagnant with 67 percent youth voters, despite a 9.3 percent growth in electorate size.
