Yaas weakened from VSCS to cyclonic storm at 5:30 P.M: IMD (Live Updates)

The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) Yaas is likely to weaken during the next six hours, IMD said. It made landfall around 8:30 A.M. today, on 26th May, about 40 km South-Southeast of Balasore, Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Around 5,76,288 people have been evacuated in Odisha so far, with 60 ODRAF and 52 NDRF teams deployed in 10 identified districts.

19:15 – The VSCS Yaas weakened into a cyclonic storm at 17:30 hours of May 26, 2021, said IMD.

19:09 – Trees on Baragadiya Road, Jharkhand were uprooted due to strong winds of cyclone Yaas.

18:23 – Northern part of Kerala also received heavy rainfall due to cyclone Yaas. According to the regional meteorological centre at Thiruvananthapuram, yellow alert has been announced in nine districts.

17:55 – Yaas is likely to hit Jharkhand tonight. The state is on high alert as it is likely to receive heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on 26th and 27th May.

16:34 – Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, held a review meeting with officials in view of the cyclone Yaas. She will be visiting East Midnapore on May 28.

16:02 – Department of Water Resources, Odisha has operationalised a toll free number to provide assistance/information regarding flood and cyclone.

15:17 – The IMD informed that Yaas would cross north Odisha coast to the south of Balasore during next three hours as a VSCS with a maximum sustained wind speed of 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph.

15:09 – Yaas is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm during the next six hours.

14:41 – Odisha Fire Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence teams have started the restoration and road clearance work in the affected districts of Odisha.

14:35 – Four tankers of liquid medical oxygen is being transported from Angul, Odisha to Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam. Two tankers of the same will be transported form Jajpur to Berhampur and Bhubaneswar.

14:27– Two people died in West Bengal due to cyclone Yaas, one carried away by the surge from the sea and another died after the house collapsed in East Midnapore.

13:55 – The India Meteorological Department has issued a flash flood warning in North Odisha and Jharkhand.

13:25 – VSCS Yaas completed its landfall process. It crossed the coast of North Odisha about 20 km South of Balasore between 10:30 A.M. and 11:30 A.M today with an estimated wind speed of 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph. Then it went Northwestwards and at 11:30 A.M., centered near 21.4°N/86.9°E ,about 15 km South-southwest of Balasore.

12:50 – Bihar government deployed 22 NDRF and SDRF teams in districts adjoining Jharkhand and West Bengal.

12:40 – The Regional Met Centre, IMD, Odisha informed about the state and district-wise average rainfall in Odisha.

12:09 – Fire teams clearing trees toppled by Cyclone Yaas in Bhandaripokhari area of Bhadrak district. Restoration works also underway in other regions of the district.

11:00 – NDRF teams in Nilkanthapur rescue stranded citizens, old lady and a six-month old baby.

10:55 – Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik appreciated the team of NDRF and Erasama BDO to rescue 10 people from a capsized boat.

10:54 – “Latest observation at 10:30 A.M. indicates that the system is now crossing the coast to the south of Balasore. The landfall process will take about two hours to complete,” said IMD.

10:45 – At 09:30 A.M, IMD updated that Yaas was located about 30 kms South-southeast of Balasore, with a wind speed of 130-140 kmph gusting to 1555kmph. 

10:39 – Intense convective cloud mass has already entered Odisha coast. Area of most intense convection is seen in the southwest sector.

10:26 – Landfall process is continuing. It will take around 3 hours to complete. 30 km south-southeast of Balasore at 0930 hours IST, IMD updated. 

9:58 – The cyclone Yaas made landfall around 8:30 A.M. today, on 26th May about 40 km South-Southeast of Balasore, Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

9:13 – Gusty winds uprooted trees in Chandipur Road, Balasore, Odisha.

7:44 – Yaas centered about 40 km east of Dhamra and 90 km South-Southeast of Balasore. It may cross North Odisha-West Bengal coasts around noon of 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) at a wind speed of 130-140 kmph.

On May 21, 2021, the IMD made an announcement that a low pressure is very likely to form over East Central bob and adjoining north Andaman Sea around 22nd May, 2021. The update also mentioned that It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the 24th. Also, it is also very likely to move Northwestwards and reach near Odisha-West Bengal coasts by the morning of 26th May.
