The illegal Bangladeshi immigrants detained on October 27 await their “expedited deportation” in shelters rather than in the jails

After the massive crackdown on October 27 over the illegal Bangladeshis, a news report, quoted JC Sandeep Patil saying, “The illegal immigrants are lodged at the shelters instead of the jails to expedite their deportation.”

The 60 detainees included 29 men, 22 women and 9 children. The list included those who have overstayed their permit to those who have no registration or documents supporting their Indian citizenship.

A news report spoke about the deprived background of the immigrants who “smuggled their last Taka to be smuggled into an alien country.” They comprise the waste segregators, rug pickers and construction workers in the eastern part of Bangalore.

Via a syndicate, some of these detainees had acquired Aadhar Cards and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) is trying to track them down. Most of them are construction workers.

The detention of M D Arif Hussein on Bangalore airport on Sunday, followed by trial of Khadija who is to be “physically deported across the border at the end of her 5 years sentence” as the court said, have resurged the immigrant conundrum.

An article has given a vivid insight into the precarious condition the Kala Maati (Bangladeshi Bengalis) living in Thubarahalli, East Bangalore. This lot is one among the many economically marginalized communities that are attracted to India’s IT Capital and have selectively fallen prey to the anti-Bangladeshi sentiment, in light of the NRC.

Mr. Mahesh, personnel from the Central Crime Branch, revealed to The Softcopy that some of the detainees are lodged at the Marthahalli shelter.

A report said that the deportation of the 60 detainees is being delayed as Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) hasn’t provided the necessary instructions.

On this, the Assistant FRRO Mr. Rajasekhara told The Softcopy, “FRRO is not involved in preparing the list of the illegal immigrants that is delaying their detention and deportation.”

After the call for NRC in Bangalore by South Bangalore MP Tejasvi Surya, Karnataka Home Minister Basavraj Bommai’s statement about “not dropping NRC and collecting database of illegal immigrants” has catalyzed the crackdown against the illegal Bangladeshis.

While the persecution of the suspected illegal Bangladeshis continues across Bangalore, Amit Shah has announced “Nationwide NRC by 2024.”
