IIJNM-FactShala Zonal Hub for Media Literacy
Newsletter September 2023
Dear Readers,
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Media Literacy Zonal Hub project in collaboration with FactShala. This is a pan India student Media Literacy initiative aimed at empowering students to build resilience against misinformation.
In this month’s edition of Media Literacy, students uncovered the web of media ownership and its impact on today’s media landscape. With a focus on various media types and revenue models that govern them in the digital age, our students’ explored a fresh perspective on the media they consume daily.
Understanding Media Ownership
Students attended sessions on media ownership and independent media outlets in India. These sessions sprouted discussion and questions on the influence of ownership that controls creation of content, promotion, and overall information landscape.
Group Presentations
To gain a better understanding of students’ creations, our students were divided into groups, with each group exploring a specific medium. Each group presented the details of media functions, revenue models and the impact of media ownership on the content that we consume.
The work by students has shed a light on the role played by media ownership and its subtle impact on the information we consume and the decisions we make on a daily basis. Their work stresses the need for why people should be an informed reader, especially the young readers.
Creating informational posters
Our students used their knowledge and research findings to make creative posters. These posters focused on the intricate relationship between media ownership, content creation, and audience consumption.
Students showcased their creativity in these posters by highlighting various aspects of media ownership and its impact on what we read, watch, and listen to.
Stay tuned for more explorations into the world of Media Literacy in our next newsletter.
