The state government aims to construct five lakh houses in the next five years.
The Karnataka High Court has directed the state and central governments to ensure proper implementation of housing schemes meant for the families from Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said, “It is needless to note that the various schemes launched by the central government as well as the state government shall be properly implemented and the respondents shall ensure that the benefits under the scheme should reach the beneficiaries.”
The direction was issued while hearing a petition filed by Advocate Mohamad Iqbal seeking a direction to the respondents to provide housing to eligible homeless families from rural and urban areas.
The state government filed its statement of objection by giving the details of the various schemes that have been launched by the government in order to provide housing to the people from BPL families. It was stated that whoever fulfils the criteria under the schemes have been given houses.
In January 2022, the Union Government announced that it is going to synchronize the Housing Department data from Karnataka. More than 18 lakh people in Karnataka are to be benefitted from the schemes. Each Assembly constituency is targeted to get 1500 – 2500 houses.
