Over 1,018 cases under sexual violence out of which over 600 cases still pending.
Crime Review and Performance of Units under Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) projects, shows that there are over 400 teenage molestation cases in a month in the city.
“Cases regarding sexual violence has significantly increased in the last few months, it usually involves teenage molestation cases and missing reports in the city,” said Maria, a practicing advocate from the Civil Court of Bangalore.
P. Srinivasa, Police sub inspector ( PSI) of Ashoknagar had said that there have been several criminal cases in the last few months across all zones. He said, “I have had cases regarding molestation come in frequently in these weeks. However it has been a challenge to see a decrease in the same as a lot of girls are afraid to come up and talk about these cases.” He said that over 1,018 cases were booked under sexual violence out of which over 600 cases still pending.
Syed Altaf Ahmed , B.Sc L.L.B , senior consultant and advocate, said, “Just as cases like corruption and theft are at a constant rise, cases like teenage molestation (NDPS) and missing cases are seeing an increase of at least 95 cases every month.” He added, “Usually cases like these are out only because more women are educated.”
Mano Joseph, a junior advocate in the High Court of Karnataka, said, “Missing cases are rising due to various reasons, it is difficult to pin the exact motive behind these offences. However in just a span of few months there are over 300 cases. We get reports and a few are pending for evidence collection and court hearing.”
Shekhar H.T, Deputy Commissioner of police, Central division, said, “We are on full swing trying to cover these cases with utmost expertise. We are yet to start awareness-based programs everywhere possible such that people can be more aware to file cases without fear.”
Dr. Divya, a child and adolescents psychologist said, “Adolescents coming out of such traumas like molestation or their known friends who have gone missing takes up their entire mental well being. It is difficult to bring them out of these situations. However with counselling and proper attention it is possible to help those who are struggling.”
