Post remains vacant as students don’t have teachers for physical education.
Bangalore: The Primary and High Schools in K Gollahalli, have no physical education teacher. The Headmaster of the high school, said that they had sent letters to the government to hire teachers for the vacant posts.
Geetha T, Headmaster of K Gollahalli Government High School, said, “Our school’s major problem is that, we don’t have a physical education teacher. Sometimes in a week I take yoga classes. Since four years there is no physical education teacher, we can’t give proper knowledge about the physical fitness to the students. In physical education class we ask them to go and play.”
Sweety, a student of class nine, said, “From class eight, I am waiting for physical education teacher but no one has come. I asked our teachers about this and they said they were trying to appoint a physical education teacher.”
Harsha TB, a student of class 10, said, “I am in tenth class, but I don’t know about physical education because, since four years no physical education teacher is there and next year I will complete my high school without physical education.”
It is not just the physical education teachers who are missing from the school. Bhagya, a teacher from K Gollahalli Primary School expressed her concern over vacant posts of many teachers. “We don’t have Hindi, English and Physical Education teachers since two years. Because of fewer teachers we have to manage these subject classes also. Students are not getting proper knowledge on physical fitness and sports,” she said.
Geetha, too, is concerned about the vacant posts of Hindi and English subjects. The school has 329 students, and according to government policy they need two teachers each for Hindi and English. However they only have one teacher for each. At times Geetha takes Hindi classes, too, due to a shortage of teachers.
She said, “We have sent letters to the Block Education Officer (BEO) about these vacancies and they will take some action on this.”
An official from Commissioner for Public Instruction, said, “In some schools no recruitment has happened because of some administrative issues. We sent a proposal to the government for recruitment of teachers. So soon the recruitment will happen and we are looking into this issue.”
Pranayani, a B.Ed professor, said, “The physical education teacher is appointed by the state government and in each school one physical education teacher is mandatory. With the help of physical education, students can develop their knowledge in physical fitness, health and sports also.”
According to the Annual Status Of Education Report (ASER) 2022 report, Karnataka has 30.4 percent schools with a separate physical education teacher.
