Part II of Mani Ratnam’s adaptation of Kalki’s magnum opus releases today.
Theatres in Bengaluru anticipate higher sales of tickets for Ponniyin Selvan (PS) II as PS I generated Rs. 500 crores in 2022.
Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan star caste includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, jayam ravi, and Karthi.
Raj Shekhar owner of the Lakshmi Theatre in Bengaluru, said, he was expecting a higher footfall on the first day of the show as PS I did well. He added that the people have a lot of expectations from the second part.
“More than 85 percent of the seats were occupied on the first show of the first day. “However, I cannot tell as of now about the total collection as the night shows generally have more viewers,” he said. The other shows which were played around 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. had 30 per cent and 52 per cent of the overall occupancy of the seats, respectively, he said.
“I don’t think that PS II will be able to generate as much revenue as PS I. The first part was produced in four years but the second part was produced within a year,” said Raj. He added that to get a good response they are trying to encourage the movie to be played in other languages apart from Tamil.
Sundarraj, secretary from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) said that he has not seen the movie so far but based on the previous hit, Ponniyan Selvan I and Thalapathi, the movie would definitely be liked by the audience. “I think the collection for part two would be twice as compared to the previous one,” he said.
Kushal, owner of two theatres in Bengaluru said, “All the movies that were on hold due to the pandemic are getting released now.”
He said Films released in the last six months did not do well, but PS I generated around Rs. 500 crore so he expects PS II will do better. “In the first half of the day on April 28, 45 percent of the tickets were sold for PS II and we are expecting the footfall to increase by the end of the day,” he said.
PS II has received an overwhelming response from the viewers, and has been rated 8.7 out of 10, shows the IMDB ratings.
Avijit who watched PS I on the very first day said, “I watched the movie in Tamil. The storyline was very interesting, but I did not find the characters and the songs in the movie that intriguing.”
