Reconstructed pavement disrupts water supply

City Elections

People in Rajaji Nagar are having no drinking water.

The residents in Rajaji Nagar are forced to travel a few kilometers to get drinking water after the supply in their homes was stopped, six months ago.

Samanvitha, owner of a general store in 1st block Rajaji Nagar, said, “The main issue residents are facing is that, we don’t get pure drinking water. From the past six months, people who are living on first and second floor are not getting drinking water. People are forced to go to public water plants to get drinking water. A few months ago Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) department re-constructed the pavement outside our houses, due to which the water supply was interrupted.”

She added, “The young people can carry 20 liters water cans to second floor, but senior citizens cannot do it. We have informed our landlord about the issue and he has complained to the authorities but no action has been taken so far.”

Due to the water issue in locality, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) have set up drinking water plants at different locations for people to fill water from there. People have to pay Rs. five for 20 litres of water. But they can only use old five rupee coins.

BWSSB has also put up a list of places where the residents can find old five rupee coins.

With the Karnataka assembly election set to take on place on May 10, local citizens have marked the water problem issue as one of the prominent problems of the Rajaji Nagar 1st block in the greater Rajaji Nagar Assembly Constituency, which falls under Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency.

A resident of Rajaji Nagar said, “Other than the water issue, the authorities cut the trees and often put acid on them.”

Prakash Jain, a shop owner in Rajaji Nagar said, “The roads are poorly constructed and often lead to potholes. Many footpaths are either covered in debris or are broken. The parks are not clean and the people who pass by throw t garbage in the park.”
