Residents of Palm Spring Layout in Doddakallasandra complained that the Cauvery water pipeline has been leaking time and again for six months.
BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials, from today morning have started clearing the huge amount of Cauvery water that was leaking from the transmission line at Raghuvanhalli, Palm Spring Layout on Wednesday leading to water flowing all over the area for eight to nine hours.
One of the officials on grounds said that they started the work today as there were no staffs they could send when the incident happened.
A resident from Palm Spring Layout in Doddakallasandra said, “The water pipe leakage issue has been there for six months now. We complain to BWSSB whenever there is leakage but the officials come and clear the water and leave.”
Several leakages in the water pipes diminish the already scarce supply of water in the city said some residents.
S. V Venkatesh, the chief engineer of BWSSB said that out of the 303 MLD water that the pipeline holds, only 0.2 MLD water has leaked out. When the residents asked for a permanent solution to this problem, the BWSSB officials said that they need to cut the water supply for a month to change the main pipeline.
The chief engineer also added that due to the upcoming elections the government has not taken any risk of changing the pipe, so the BWSSB officials have planned to clear the chamber.
The Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage-V project has been undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs.5, 550 crore with financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the project and will be completed in 2023-24. Completion of 775 MLD capacity scheme will help in providing potable water to 50 lakh people of the city.
The Cauvery drinking water pipeline leakage has been a persistent issue since a long time. In 2021 there was a leakage in the main transmission pipeline at Thorekadanahalli that supplies water to the city. The pipeline had to be shut to stop the six month-old leakage problem.
