The commission tightens grip ahead of state assembly elections
The Election Commission (EC) has seized nearly Rs. 5 crore of unaccounted cash ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections to be held in May.
A total of 1,156 flying squads and 1,255 have been doing round around the states, and catching hold of any activity that violates the election model code of conduct.
Sanjiv Kumar, the chief electoral officer of Karnataka, said the Static Surveillance Team has seized Rs 4.07 crore in cash, and other items worth Rs 1.21 crore. The flying squad has seized Rs. 54.52 lakh worth of cash, and Rs. 9.96 crore worth of othervaluables.
He added that any amount over Rs. 50,000 will be seized from individuals if they fail to make known the source of that money.
M3 electronic voting machines (EVM) with voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) will be commissioned in Karnataka.
