Number of polluted river stretches in India in 2022

Around 311 river stretches in India were identifies as being polluted in 2022. Most fresh water pollution is caused by the addition of organic material which is mainly sewage, but can also be food waste or farm effluent, according to Young People Trust for the Environment (ypte).

Rivers in India are polluted more than ever largely due to rapid urbanization and lack of sewage facilities to deal with the population influx in urban spaces. There is a grave need to prevent solid and liquid waste dumping in rivers. And most importantly to educate people around the proper ways of handling waste water and it’s recycling.
