Unstable Varthur Bridge, concern for commuters

The Varthur Bridge in immediate need of reconstruction.

By Priyanka Sarkar

Bangalore, Sept 27: Local commuters say the Varthur Bridge on the State Highway 35 is trembling and badly maintained. It is on its verge of a collapse as heavy duty vehicles commute everyday.

Kuruba Kumar, a resident, says the Varthur Bridge shakes violently whenever a vehicle rumbles over it. The bridge has been a matter of nightmare for all the people around. It also gets heavier traffic than the usual, with heavy duty trucks and buses in transfer.

Venkateshappa, Chief Engineer, Major Roads, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Pallike (BBMP) says, the bridge is in extreme bad condition and that there is an increasing possibility of a breakdown. However, BBMP has now opened its tender for the road widening and development charges, which will close by September 28. The construction works will further start only after the tender is passed.

Pushpa Manjunath, Ward Councilors, (BBMP) of Varthur (Ward Number: 149) says, the entire road stretch from ‘Varthur-Balagere road up to Panathur, is being reconstructed and widened, but it might take more time than the usual. He said, the construction will only be completed after 7-8 months.

Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO, Namma Bengaluru Foundation said the road on the bridge, which is less than 30 feet wide is not capable to take such heavy traffic. Keeping the local commuter’s safety in mind, it is really necessary for BBMP to put a check on the vehicle size.
