 BBMP’s drive to increase the city’s green cover gets delayed again

BBMP has been trying to promote more tree plantation through green app

The BBMP was to plant 1 lakh saplings by the monsoon of this year, out of which about 90 percent of the work has been done, said Shanthkumar, ACFO of BBMP. Bharat Daga, user of the app said that the rest of the saplings were to be planted through citizen initiatives using an app called the BBMP Green App, however, citizens’ responses has been poor in this regard where only 20 percent of the saplings have been distributed and planted using the app.

Citizens ,who had ordered the free saplings through the app complained that they are yet to receive their first consignment.

Bharat Dagasaid that he had ordered 25 saplings through the app. However, it has been over two months and he is yet to receive a notification message from the Palike about the collection point of his first sapling consignment. Tharanath,DRFO (Deputy Range Forest Officer) of the Karnataka Forest Department said that in Mahadevpura zone, 36,000 saplings have been planted on tender basis; the rest has been delayed due to the rains.

Kapil Sharma, Founder of SayTrees said that even though the BBMP tried to meet the projected target since its inception in April 2017, the sapling mortality is questionable as he has witnessed the BESCOM removing the saplings for their own projects.
